Pudiendo VS. podiendo. How are gerunds formed in Spanish?

Pudiendo is the correct form of the verb poder in the gerund.

In Spanish many verbs are regular or irregular, this means that in some tenses they are formed differently.

In this post I am going to share irregular gerunds.

What is a gerund?

Form of the verb, whose ending is -ndo, it is part of verb forms conjugation or as an adverb.

Examples of verb forms:

Ella está tocando el piano.

(She is playing the piano.)

Nosotros hemos estado trabajando en el proyecto desde hace cinco meses.

(We have been working on the project for five months.)

Examples of the gerund as an adverb:

El niño entró corriendo.

(The boy ran in.)

Se fue caminando tranquilamente.

(He walked away quietly.)

There is also the compound gerund, which is formed with the verb “haber” and the participle.

Examples:

¿Cómo ves esta situación habiendo vivido fuera del país?

(How do you see this situation having lived outside the country?)

Habiendo trabajado en esta compañía por más de 25 años, puedo decir que un cambio de gerencia es necesario.

(Having worked in this company for more than 25 years, I can say that a change of management is necessary.)
