We use the present progressive to talk about:
- things we are doing right now

We use the past progressive to talk about:
- an action that was happening in the past, we want to emphasize continuity
Estaba mirando por la ventana.
Hace un momento estaba durmiendo.
Ellos estaban jugando un partido de fútbol.
- a continuous action that was interrupted by another
Cuando estaba mirando por la ventana ví el accidente.
Estaba durmiendo cuando escuché el timbre de la puerta.
Ellos estaban jugando un partido de fútbol cuando comenzó a llover.
We use the present perfect progressive to:
- describe an action that started in the past and continues into the present, we want to emphasize its continuity
Ella ha estado llorando toda la tarde.
Los chicos han estado mirando la televisión desde que llegaron de la escuela.
El bebé ha estado durmiendo muy bien.
How to conjugate verbs in the present simple
To form the present progressive we have to use the verb ESTAR + verb (gerund)

The verbs that end in -ER in the infinitive form will change to -IENDO
- comer – comiendo

The verbs that end in -AR in the infinitive will change to -ANDO

- jugar – jugando
The verbs that end in -IR in the infinitive will change to -IENDO

- conducir – conduciendo
How to make questions in the Present Progressive:
In Spanish we always use two question marks: ¿? Luckily we don’t have to change the order of the words. However, we have to change the intonation (rising) for questions. Have a look at these examples.
- ¿Estás viviendo en España?
- ¿Están mirando la televisión?
- ¿Está estudiando en la universidad?
- ¿Ustedes están jugando ahora?
Examples of the progressive form in Spanish:
- Hemos estado esperando el tren.
- Todos los estudiantes están haciendo un examen en este momento.
- ¿Qué estaban haciendo los chicos?
- Estoy comiendo ahora.
- Mi hijo ha estado leyendo un libro de historia.
- Tú estás aprendiendo español.
- Los empleados estaban en la reunión.
- Nosotros no hemos estado yendo al trabajo por ahora.
